Beyond Junction 11
The motorway ends at Junction 11 but the road does not. It carries on as the A42, built to a similar standard as a grade-separated dual carriageway, past Ashby-de-la-Zouch and Castle Donington to the M1 at Junction 23A, near East Midlands Airport. A motorway to the M1 was planned north of the M6 but was never built as planned; the A42 took its place. For M1 news, see M1 Traffic.
How far between junctions
Measured along the road, Junction 3A is about 12 miles from the M5, Junction 6 about 20 miles, Junction 10 about 32 miles and Junction 11 about 40 miles. The longest gaps between exits are at the northern end: Junction 9 to Junction 10, and Junction 10 to Junction 11, are both several miles with no way off.
