Roadworks on a short, busy motorway
The M42 is only 40 miles long, but the Department for Transport counts more than 100,000 vehicles a day on most of its main line south of the M6. The busiest counted stretch, Junction 4 to Junction 5 between Shirley and Solihull, carried 136,724 vehicles a day in 2025.
The Junction 5A and Junction 6 scheme
The largest recent project on the M42 is National Highways’ £282 million scheme at Junction 6. It created a new Junction 5A between Solihull and Junction 6, linked by 2.4 km of new dual carriageway — the A4545 — to the Clock Interchange, giving direct access to Birmingham Airport, the NEC, Birmingham Business Park and the planned HS2 interchange station. The A4545 link opened in December 2024. As at 25/09/2026, National Highways’ scheme page lists the scheme as started, and its latest update, dated 13/04/2026, says traffic management between Junctions 5 and 6 was being lifted and works around Junction 6 would finish over the following weeks, with some overnight lane and slip-road closures. This page shows planned and ongoing works. Unplanned events such as breakdowns and collisions are on M42 accidents, and overnight closures are gathered on M42 closures tonight. Works on the A42 beyond Junction 11 are covered by Traffic News England.
